THE JUST WILLIAM CARD GAME

Based on the "William" Series of Books
by Richmal Crompton.

This game is based on 10 of the "William" books, and the pictures on the cards are all of exciting incidents from these books. There are 10 complete sets of pictures and each set is taken from a different "William" book. There are 4 cards to each set and each of the 4 bears a circle in the top left corner showing the initials of the book from which the picture is taken. Each set of 4 has a different coloured circle.

There are 2 identical cards picturing William himself and 2 also of Violet Elizabeth. None of these 4 cards has a coloured circle.

The books from which this game has been devised are:—

"Just William"

(J.W.)

"More William"

(M.W.)

"William Again"

(W.A.)

"William the Rebel"

(W.R.)

"William the Showman"

(W.S.)

"William the Gangster"

(W.G.)

"William the Detective"

(W.D.)

"William the Outlaw"

(W.O.)

"William the Pirate"

(W.P.)

"William the Bold"

(W.B.)

THE OBJECT OF THE GAME

is to collect 2 "books", i.e., 2 sets of 4 cards. Each set will be of a different book. When there are 5 or more players, 1 "book", i.e., 1 set, is sufficient.

THE DEAL

Choose a dealer who shuffles well and deals 4 cards to each player, placing the remainder of the pack face downwards in the centre of the table.

THE PLAY

Each player looks at his cards and, keeping in mind the object of collecting 2 complete sets of 4, he passes to the player on his left any 1 card he does not want.

Then, commencing with the dealer, each player in turn draws 1 card from the stack. Each player then does the same again, so that each has now picked up 2 cards. Again the cards are examined and another unwanted card is passed to the player on the left.

The play is continued in this manner until all the cards have been taken from the centre stack, or until a player has collected 2 complete sets of 4. When the stack has been exhausted it does not matter that players do not each have the same number of cards.

If no one has collected 2 sets of 4 before the centre stack is finished, the play is continued by "swapping" at will between the players, not in turn. To do this each player calls out that he wishes to "swap" 1, 2 or 3 of his cards for a similar number of cards which anyone is willing to offer in exchange. The cards must not be exposed, that is, a player does not see what he is offered by another player. This continues until any player has completed 2 sets, except of course, when there are 5 or more players (see "The Object of the Game").

VIOLET ELIZABETH AND WILLIAM CARDS

So long as a player holds a Violet Elizabeth card he may not lay down his second set, or in the case of 5 or more players, any set, unless he holds a William card 'also.

END OF GAME

The first player to lay down his second set (or any set when there are 5 or more players) calls out "I declare". He is the winner of the game.
