Jack of All Trades

by Kum-Bak Sports

INSTRUCTIONS AND RULES

for the Game of

"jack of all trades."

Entered at Stationers' Hall.
All designs copyright.

This game is played with the pack of cards and some counters. A quarter of the cards are designed to represent various Craftsmen, and the remainder represent the Tools and Implements used by these Craftsmen in following their employment.

The aim of each player is to collect a complete set of cards representing a Craftsman and his tools.

Two or more can play the game.

The method of play is as follows :—

The Dealer deals four cards to each player, commencing with the first player on his left.

Each player contributes one counter to the pool.

After the cards are dealt, the player to the left of the Dealer is allowed to take one card from the pack ; he must then discard one card which he must place on the table FACE DOWNWARD by the side of the Main Pack, The next player on his left is allowed the choice of taking up this card or one from the Main Pack. He must then discard one card which he also places FACE DOWNWARD on the Discard Pack.

Each player in turn is allowed to take a card either from the top of the Discard Pack or the Main Pack.

As soon as one player has succeeded in collecting a complete set of cards, consisting of a. Craftsman and his Tools, he discards the extra card and calls ' 'Jack of all Trades," thus being the winner of the game, and receives half the counters of the pool. But if he has mistaken the Tools of the Craftsman and has not a complete set, he must pay half value of the pool.

Should any player have the Burglar in his hand at the end of a game he must pay half value of the pool, but if the Burglar is accompanied by a Policeman then he takes the remainder of the pool.

Similarly, at the end of a game, if any player has any of the Burglar's Tools he also pays two counters, unless accompanied by a Policeman's Lantern, Helmet or Handcuffs.

"Jack of all Trades" for young people.

This game is played as follows :—

The cards are dealt in the usual manner. A pool is formed, each player contributing three counters.

The game commences by the player on the left of the dealer asking any one of the other players for a card to complete a "Craftsman" set. Should the player asked have a card of the set required he must give it up; and the first player may again ask any one other player for a card to complete a set.

If, when a player is asked he has not a card of the set required, he must reply, "On strike," it is then his turn to ask for a card; and so on, until all the sets are complete, the player holding the largest number of sets taking half the pool.

A player may not ask for a card unless he holds one of the set asked for.

The game is continued only by those players who hold one or more sets, in a similar manner to the first part, except that complete sets are asked for instead of single cards, commencing by the player holding the largest number of sets.

The game continues until one player holds all the sets, when he becomes the winner and takes the remaining half of the pool.
