"HISTORY OF ENGLAND " card game (No 1)
The game can be played by any number of players from 3 to 8. The pack consists of 69 cards divided into sets. The Crown Card denoting the reign of a King or Queen, and the others the chief events or persons during that reign. The sets vary in the number of cards, according to the length of the reign. The pack is then shuffled, and the player who shall deal is decided upon. The dealer then takes the pack and starting with the player on his left, deals each player (one at a time) 7 cards each if 3. 4, or 5 players, or 5 cards each if 6, 7, or 8 players, are taking part. The remainder of the pack is then placed in the pool face downwards. The player on the dealer's left then commences play by asking any player for a card belonging to a set of which they hold the Crown Card. If the player asked has not the card in question, then the player who asked takes the top card from the pool and it becomes the turn of the next player on his left to ask, and so on. If the player is successful in claiming a card, he may continue until refused. In the event of a player not possessing a Crown Card when it is their turn to ask. they may ask for a Crown Card from any player, provided that they have at least two cards belonging to the reign in question. This gives the player with a knowledge of history and a good memory a chance, even if they have not any Crown Cards. Before surrendering a Crown Card asked for in this manner, the player asked may demand to see the two cards belonging to the set. If they do not belong to the set, then the player asked claims both cards. A Crown Card won in this manner cannot be reclaimed. Play proceeds until all the cards in the pool have been taken. If the round is incomplete when this occurs, then the remaining players ask for cards in the usual way, until the round is completed. The last player of course to ask being the dealer. Complete rounds are then played according to the number of players taking part. Three players 3 rounds, etc. During play, as sets are completed, they are laid aside and cannot be claimed, of course. When the last round has been completed, the players show their completed sets. Points are scored for the sets according to the number of cards in the set (excluding Crown Cards). The player with the most paints being the winner. Another method is to play a game of 50 points. The first player to reach 50 being the winner, which might occur of course, when a player completes a set, in the middle of a game.
