HAPPY FAMILIES OF THE WORLD (version 1)
by Pepys

RULES for the Game of
HAPPY FAMILIES OF THE WORLD version1
Pepys series

The pack consists of 36 cards made up of 9 Families of different nationalities, namely: Holland, India, France, Austria, Greece, Arabia, Italy, Norway and Eskimo. Each Family comprises Father, Mother, Son and Daughter, pictured in their national costume.

The object of the game is firstly to collect single cards to make up complete Families, and then to collect complete Families until one player holds all the cards.

The cards are shuffled and dealt to each player until the pack is exhausted. The dealer decides what cards he wants to complete Families with the cards in his hand, but he must have at least one of the Family in his hand. He then asks any player for a particular card, e.g., Master France, Miss Holland, etc. If the player asked holds the card, it must be handed over and the same player continues to ask for cards from any player until he asks a player who cannot produce it. Then it is this player's turn to ask for cards from any of the others.

As complete Families are collected, the four cards are placed face down in front of the player who collected the Family. If a player has no cards left, because he has used his last cards to make up a Family, his turn passes to the player on his left.

After all Families are collected, the game continues by asking for complete Families. The player who, at the end, holds all the Families is the winner.

"PLEASE" AND "THANK YOU" RULES

A player, when asking for cards, MUST say "Please", e.g., "Please have you Mrs. India?" If he forgets, he loses his turn to the player he asked. When a card is handed over, the receiver MUST say, "Thank You", before putting it in his own hand or on the table. If he forgets, the player who handed it over can ask for it back, but he too, must say "Please".

The player on the left of the dealer, deals for the next round.
