Happy Families

RULES For PLAYING
"Happy Families"

1. Any number of players may participate in this game, which is played with a pack of 48 cards, comprising 12 families, as follows :—

Mr. Back, the Footballer

Mr. Carr, the Motorist

Mr Duck, the Cricketer

Mr Mike, the Announcer

Mr. Pug, the Boxer

Mr. Putt, the Golfer

Mr. Salt, the Boatman

Mr. Snap, the Photographer

Mr. Strong the Weight Lifter

Mr. Swift, the Runner

Mr. Weed, the Gardener

Mr. Wing, the Airman

Each family consists of Father, Mother, Son and Daughter.

2. When the cards have been well shuffled they should be cut and dealt face downwards to each player in turn until the pack is exhausted.

3. Each player then proceeds to arrange his cards as near as possible in family groups and should he possess a complete family of 4 cards, it should be placed face downwards on the table.

4. The aim of the players is to complete as many families as possible and the player sitting to the left of the dealer opens the game by asking any of the other players for any card he requires to complete another family. For instance, if Mr. Strong is wanted, he must address another player and say " Is Mr. Strong at home?"

5. Should the player thus addressed hold this card, he must pass it to the caller, who is then entitled to ask for yet another card (either from the same person or another player) and so on until he makes a mistake.

6. The player not having the card for which he was asked, must answer " Not at home," and it is then his turn to make the calls.

7. Players must remember that they may only ask for a card if they have another card or more of the same family in their hands. Also a player must give up a card when requested to do so.

8. When all the families have been completed, the game proceeds on the same lines, but instead of asking for one card such as Mr. Strong, the player asks for the four cards, namely, " Is Mr. Strong and Family at home?" The first player to ask for completed families is the one completing the last family in the earlier part of the game.

9. The winner of the game is he who at the end possesses all I2 families.
