GIRL
by Pepys (Castell Brothers Ltd)

RULES for the game of

GIRL

A Game of Skill for 2 to 5 Players.

Produced by arrangement with GIRL

THE PACK.
GIRL is played with 44 cards.
There are:—

12 Heroine cards, each showing one of the 6 GIRL characters (2 each of Wendy, Jinx, Robbie,Penny, Belle and Lettice Leefe).

2 Girl cards, each showing the famous GIRL sign.

30 Trio cards, each showing, in different order, 3 of the Heroines.

Heroine Cards are worth 5 points each.

Girl Cards are worth 4 points each.

They can be used instead of any TRIO card.

Trio Cards: each small Heroine picture is worth I, 2 or 3 points, as indicated on the cards.

OBJECT AND OUTLINE OF THE GAME.
The object of the game is to win cards, and to win cards one must win tricks.

Briefly, each player is dealt cards, further cards are turned up until a HEROINE card appears. Players now choose 3 cards from their hands, which together will give a good points score for that Heroine. They place their 3 cards face-down and all turn them over together. The set of 3 scoring most points for the Heroine wins, and the winner takes all the cards from the table which show that Heroine, and all Girl cards. These are set aside and kept by the winner. The cards left on the table are returned to the players' hands.

Note: In these Rules, HEROINE (in block letters) means a HEROINE CARD, while Heroine (small letters) refers to one of the 3 small pictures on TRIO cards.

THE DEAL.
Choose a dealer, who shuffles the pack and deals until each player has 7 cards. Place the rest of the pack face-down in the centre of the table.

THE PLAY.
Players take their cards into their hands and look at them. The player on the dealer's left turns up the top card of the centre pack. If it is a GIRL card or a TRIO card, she takes it into her hand. This completes her turn and play passes to the player on her left.

Players are, therefore, continually replenishing their hands.

If the top card is a HEROINE card, the player who turned it up places it face-up on the table beside the pack.

PLAY FOR TRICKS.
As soon as a HEROINE card is exposed a trick is played, and each player chooses 3 cards from her hand and places them face-down on the table before her.

Choosing the 3 cards.
In choosing the 3 cards, each player must consider whether she is likely to win the trick or not.

The most points likely to be scored with 3 cards is 12—one HEROINE (where the picture is the same as the one turned up) 5 points; one GIRL card, 4 points; one TRIO card (where the Heroine wanted is the top picture on the card) 3 points. This combination will not happen very often however, and mostly a lower total, having no GIRL or similar HEROINE card in it, will win, so if a player thinks she has a fair total of points in any 3 of her cards for the HEROINE being played for, then she will include them. Experience is the best guide. (N.B.—-2 GIRL cards can be played in a set of 3, if possible).

If she feels her total is likely to be beaten' by other players, she will choose 3 cards, if possible, which do not show that Heroine—and she would not then choose a GIRL card, as she would lose it. (HEROINE cards, different from the one being played for count NIL in tricks, and can therefore be returned to the hand after the trick).

All players must lay 3 cards on the table, so long as they have 3 cards in their hands. (Sometimes, especially at the end, players may hold less than 3 cards; then they must lay all they have).

"Showing" the Tricks.
As soon as each player has placed 3 cards on the table, everyone turns them face-up. They are then compared to see whose set of 3 counts most points for the HEROINE being played for.

Scoring for Tricks.
GIRL cards, counting 4 points, have a use similar to "Jokers." They count for you towards any HEROINE.

There are 2 cards of each HEROINE (5 points), so if you have the other one in your hand you can include it in your 3, when it counts 5 points for you, always provided that it has the same picture as the exposed card.

TRIO cards showing a picture of the same Heroine as the exposed

HEROINE card, count I, 2 or 3 towards your score, according to the number shown on the card. Only the number shown for the correct Heroine counts. Numbers for the other Heroines on the TRIO cards are not counted. TRIO cards not showing the right Heroine at all score no points.

Winner of the Trick.

The player whose 3 cards score the highest total of points for the exposed HEROINE card wins the trick.

This player picks up all the GIRL cards, and the TRIO cards on which appear the same Heroine as the HEROINE card. These she has won and she places them aside until the end of the game.

HEROINE cards cannot be won, even if played in a trick, although they counted towards a player's score. If a HEROINE card the same as the exposed card has been played in a trick it must, after the trick has been won, be placed aside together with the exposed HEROINE card. These "used" HEROINE cards are placed face-down in a separate pile and play no further part in the game.

All players now return to their hands any cards left to them on the table, including HEROINE cards played which were not the same as the exposed one.

Ties.
If two players tie for the highest number of points, or if no player has scored any points, all players return their cards to their hands. The exposed HEROINE card however, is put aside.

After a tie, the player to the left of the last trick winner continues the play by drawing.

Further play and Tricks.
The player to the left of the trick winner continues play by turning up the next card of the centre pack as before, and taking it into her hand if it is not a HEROINE card. Whenever a HEROINE card is turned up a trick is played for.

CENTRE PACK USED UP.
When the centre pack has been used up, play continues by players in turn, laying HEROINE cards from their own hands. Players then play a trick for that HEROINE.

A player must play a HEROINE card if she has one at her turn to play; if she has none she passes.

A HEROINE card, when so placed on the table from the hand, does not count in the subsequent trick for the player from whose hand it came. All HEROINE cards, after having been played for or after having been used to score with in tricks are put aside face-down.

END OF PLAY.
Play continues until the last HEROINE card has been laid and played for.

SCORING.
Players count up all cards they have won (both GIRL and TRIO cards) counting I point per card, and deducting I point for each card left in their hands.

THE WINNER.
The winner is the first player to score an agreed number of points. For 4 players to reach 50 points will require about 6 or 7 games. For 2 players, 100 points will require about the same number of games.
