THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND CARD GAME
By Pepys Series (Gibson Games)

RULES FOR THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND CARD GAME

The pack consists of 42 cards; the two additional cards should be removed before play commences. There are 14 sets each of 3 cards, and the cards in each set all bear the same numbers. One card in each set is known as a leading card, on the face of which is printed the titles of the other 2 cards required to complete that set. The names of the leading cards are printed on one of the extra cards included in the pack. The object of the game is to complete the most sets.

The game may be played by any number of players; the pack should be shuffled and then all the cards dealt one at a time face downwards in front of each player. When the players pick up their cards, they should first look to see whether they can complete any sets and if they can, they should be laid face down on the table before actual play begins. The player to the left of the dealer is the first to play and starts by placing a leading card on the table before him. He then asks one of the other players to hand him one of the cards required to make up the set. If he is successful, he can make a similar request either to the same or another player for the remaining card of the set. Each time a set is completed it should be turned over face down in front of the player who may then play another leading card. If a player is unsuccessful in his request, then he must forfeit a card to the player to whom the request has been made.

If a player does not hold a leading card, then he must ask one of the other players for a particular leading card; the list of leading cards should be used for this purpose and the player should attempt to select a leading card which has not yet been played. If the player is unsuccessful in his request for a leading card, then he must forfeit one card to the player to whom the request has been made. If, however, the player is successful in obtaining a leading card, then he should continue play by adding to it from his own hand or requesting additional cards of the same set from other players in the usual manner. If a player has in his turn, completed a set and then finds himself without a leading card, play automatically passes to the next player on his left without any forfeit. No player must play any more than one leading card at a time and a set must be completed before another leading card is played. If a player has exhausted all his cards, except for a leading card and if he is unsuccessful in requesting a card of the same set from another player, then the leading card is forfeited to the player to whom the request has been made.

When a player forfeits a card, it should be drawn unseen from his hand by the player to whom the forfeit is made.
