This game can be a quiet family game or it can be a very noisy game if the party are inclined that way.
Cards. There are 52 cards in the pack: 7 Reminder Cards; 45 Playing Cards which are composed of 6 sets of 7 cards, each of a different colour, and 3 Penalty Cards which are all black. The 7 Reminder Cards are not dealt but taken out before shuffling and one is given to each player for reference during the game.
A set of cards is as follows: I Fire, 2 Arson, 3 Strike, 4 Riot, 5 Fog, 6 Crash, 7 Spies, and the Penalty Cards are Fog, Riot, Strike.
Players. The game is intended for from 4 to 6 players.
Dealing. Players take it in turn and after being well shuffled the cards are dealt face downwards and players on the left of dealer get any odd cards there are.
Object. The object of the game is to collect a complete set of seven cards, in one colour without any penalty card and the player doing this shouts " Stop Press."
Winner. The winner is the first person to collect a complete set and claim " Stop Press " before any other player.
Rules. At the word "go" from the dealer, players pick up their cards and having decided which set or colour they intend to collect, immediately begin to "trade" the cards they wish to dispose of for those which they require to complete their set. This they do by holding out on offer one card only, face downwards and shouting the cry of this card which they do not want, i.e.,"Fire," "Arson," etc., but giving no indication of the colour.
When one player hears another calling a card which he requires and they agree to "trade" they change cards. It may be that the card received by a player is not the colour required and may even be a penalty card, in which case they continue to trade and dispose of them.
Players do not take turns or wait for each other, but call together. In fact in the noisy game you may forget your party manners and shout each other down. If no one appears to want the card you call, return it to your pack and offer another but be quick as speed is necessary.
Remember:
1. Call only one card at a time.
2. Call the "cry" of the card you don't want.
3.Don't take "turns" or wait for each other—this is a quick game.
4. Get rid of your Penalty Cards as soon as possible—no game can be won if the claimant has a Penalty Card in hand.
5. To win, the player must obtain the complete set of seven cards all of the same colour and there must not be any Penalty Cards.
A player who inadvertently claims "Stop Press" whilst still holding Penalty Cards pays in three counters for each Penalty Card, the game being cancelled and started afresh. The, other players do not pay in fresh counters for this new game.
DISCRETIONARY PLAY
Scoring. It is suggested that an agreed number of counters (say approximately 50) are equally divided between the players.
At the beginning of each game each player pays one counter into a pool in centre of the table.
At the end of each game, players with penalty cards add to the pool I counter for "Fog," 2 for "Strike," and 3 for "Riot," if they hold these cards, and then the winner takes the pool.
Trebles. This consists of a set of three games in which the winners of the first and second games take only three counters from the pool and the winner of the third game takes the whole of the pool then remaining. The pool and penalty payments are as above.
Fives ("The Fleet Street Flutter").
This is a very quick game intended for adults and one that might possibly appeal mainly to a male party with limited time for play.
Play and scoring is exactly as previously suggested with the exception that "Stop Press" may be claimed with any 5 cards of a set. This will give a player an opportunity of calling with one or more penalty cards in his hand as he pays in to the pool which he takes if the winner or, in effect, does not have to pay for them. Other players with penalty cards will of course pay to the pool. In this game the number of players could be increased up to 8.
ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF PLAY
Whispering "Fleet Street." When the neighbours start to complain or the throat is getting dry, try Whispering Fleet Street, by whispering the cries—any player raising his voice above a whisper being penalised by one counter to the Pool, the rules otherwise as a
