Farmyard Cries
by Pepys Series Games

RULES of

Farmyard Cries

There are 44 cards in the pack, divided into seven groups, and all are illustrated by Racey Helps, the famous children's artist who illustrated Woodland Happy Families and Woodland Snap.

The number of cards in each group varies; each group consisting of a 'Mother' card (Purple band), one or two 'Young' cards (Pink band), one or two 'Where Found' cards (Yellow band), and one or more 'Breed' cards (Green band). See table at end of Rules.

Each card in a group bears the same number which shows the number of points to be earned by collecting that particular group.

OBJECT.

The object of each round is to collect 4 cards, a 'Mother' card, a 'Young' card, a 'Where Found' card and a 'Breed' card all of the same group, and the first player to collect such a set of cards is the winner of the round.

BEFORE COMMENCING TO PLAY.

After shuffling, 5 cards are dealt to each player. 10 cards are dealt, face downwards to form a stack in the centre of the table; and the remainder placed, face downwards, a short distance away. The top card of each stack is turned face upwards. The space between the two stacks is the 'Farmyard.'

TO PLAY.

The dealer now places one of his cards face downwards in the 'Farmyard' between the two stacks of cards and takes one of the two face upwards cards. As soon as a player has taken a card he turns up the next card of that stack so that there are always two cards facing upwards. The player on the left of the dealer then places one card face downwards on top of the face downward card in the 'Farmyard,' takes either of the upturned cards and turns face upwards the top card of that stack. The player on his left plays similarly and so on.

TO SWAP.

A player instead of discarding and taking one of the face upward cards may say "SWAP", in which case each player must pass one of his cards face downwards to the player on his left, but no player may accept a card before he has passed one on. A player cannot say "SWAP" if the player immediately before him did so.

CRYING FOR THE 'YOUNG.'

If a player manages to collect a 'Mother' card, a 'Where Found' card and a 'Breed' card of one group, he may cry for the 'Young' by imitating the call of the animal or bird concerned, and any player or players holding the required 'Young' card or cards must give it, or them to that player, who will then have won the round. The call to be made when crying for the Young of any group is the name given to the mother.

Crying for the 'Young' can be done at any time in the game and it does not count as a turn. There is no penalty for unsuccessfully crying, except that a player may not cry twice in one round for the same 'Young' card or cards.

THE FARMYARD.

When either of the outer stacks is exhausted move the discard stack from the 'Farmyard' into its place. Turn up the top card and continue to play.

THE END OF THE ROUND.

Whoever has collected the 'Mother' card, a 'Young' card, a 'Where Found' card and a 'Breed' card of the same group is the winner, and he must lay the four cards face upwards on the table and announce his victory by a loud cry of the animal or bird concerned. If two players complete correct sets at the same time the first player to lay his cards down and 'cry' is the winner.

Although a hand consists of 5 cards you have to collect a set of only four cards: 'Mother,' 'Young,' 'Where Found' and 'Breed'; and it does not matter what the fifth card is.

SCORING AND END OF ROUND.

The winner scores the number of points applicable to the set he has collected and shown by the number on the cards. The first player to score 60 points, or any agreed figure, wins the game. The points scored by the winner of a round are only those given to each family, not a total of the four cards, e.g.: The Dog group scores only 20 points not 80.
