RULES for the Game of
FAMILY FAVOURITES
Illustrated by RACEY HELPS
THE PACK
The cards picture the following sets of "family favourites", and there are 2 cards of each subject:
5 brown dogs, numbered in Red.
4 black or white dogs, numbered in Blue.
4 cats, numbered in Green.
3 ponies, numbered in White.
4 other subjects numbered in Black.
There are also:
4 cat-and-dog joker cards, marked "J".
RULES OF PLAY
(See page 6 for the Tortoise Game for younger children).
OBJECT OF THE GAME
The object of the game is to get rid of all the cards in your hand as speedily as possible by playing a card of the same set or of the same number as the previous card played.
DEALING
Choose a dealer who shuffles the pack and deals as follows:
If there are 2 or 3 players 6 cards are dealt to each player, but for 4, 5 or 6 players 5 cards are dealt to each. The dealer turns one card face upwards in the centre of the table, placing the remainder of the pack face downwards beside it.
Players take their cards into their hands.
PLAY
The player on the left of the dealer commences by playing, if he can, one card which must be either of the same set, i.e. having its number in the same colour as the upturned card on the table or having the same number (any colour) as that card. He plays it face upwards on top of the upturned card. The next player on his left does the same if he can, and so on.
If a player cannot play, he must pick up one card from the face-down pack, this completes his turn and he must wait for his turn again before playing a card.
JOKERS
A Cat-and-Dog Joker card can be played at any time. It gives the player the right to call for a Cat card or a Dog card to be played next, though another Joker card may be played instead. For example a Joker card is played, the player calls "Miaow" (for a cat card) or "Bow-wow." The next player must play the card called for, or a Joker. If he has none of these he must pick up a card from the pack and all succeeding players must pick up until someone plays a Cat, Dog, or Joker card.
SCORING
When a player has got rid of all his cards the hand ends. The other players add up the numbers in the corners of their cards, the Jokers counting as 15. The player with the lowest score after six games is the winner.
THE TORTOISE GAME
OBJECT OF THE GAME
This game is played in the same way as Old Maid. The object of the game is to get rid of all your cards by "throwing them away" in pairs so that eventually the one player who is left with the Tortoise card becomes the Tortoise, i.e. the slowest player in getting rid of his or her cards.
DEALING
The dealer, after removing one of the two Tortoise cards, deals all the cards to the players, one at a time. It does not matter that some of the players may have one more card than others.
PLAY
All players look at their cards and "throw out" all matching pairs of cards from their hands.
A pair is any two cards with exactly the same picture. Joker cards are treated as ordinary cards in this game.
The player on the left of the dealer then holds up his remaining cards to the player on his left (in such a way that the pictures cannot be seen by him) and this player draws any one of the cards. Play continues thus round the table. As soon as a player draws a card which matches a card in his hand he throws them both down.
A player left with no cards is out of the game. A player left with only one card hands it to the next player on his left who still has cards in his hand.
Finally, there will be only one card left, namely, one Tortoise and the player left with this card is the Tortoise and loses the game.
