RULES for the Game of
DAVY CROCKETT
King of the Wild Frontier A game for 2 to 6 players.
DESCRIPTION
The game consists of a pack of 44 cards depicting scenes from the Wait Disney Film DAVY CROCKETT which tells the life story of this famous American character. The cards are divided into four sets or suits of II cards each, Red, Yellow, Blue and White, and the cards in each suit are numbered I to I I. The numbers showing the values of the cards are coloured differently for each suit.
DAVY CROCKETT is a trick taking game which is easy to learn but there is plenty of opportunity for skill for the keen card game player. At the same time there is a sufficient element of chance to give a new player every chance.
The simple method of scoring avoids any complicated calculations.
THE OBJECT
The object of the game is to take tricks containing "character-cards, which are—No. 11 DAVY CROCKETT, No. 10 GEORGE RUSSEL, No. 9 GENERAL JACKSON, No. 8 RED STICK These cards appear in each suit and can be distinguished by borders coloured in accordance with the 4 different suits.
BEFORE COMMENCING
PLAY
So that all players will have an equal number of cards, it is sometimes necessary to remove certain cards from the pack.
If there are 2 or 4 players the whole pack is used.
If there are 5 players, remove the four cards numbered I.
If there are 3 or 6 players remove only the Red and Blue I's.
METHOD OF PLAY FOR 2 TO 4 PLAYERS
THE DEALER
Choose a dealer by cutting the cards; the player who cuts the highest card is the dealer. He deals 7 cards to each player placing the remainder of the pack face downwards in the middle of the table.
TO PLAY
Everyone picks up their cards and looks at them.
The player on the left of the dealer leads by playing a card from his hand. Each player in turn (clockwise) follows by playing a card of the same suit if possible. When a player cannot play a card of the suit originally played he must play a card of some other suit but such a card cannot win the trick.
The player who plays the card with the highest number of the suit led wins the trick. He then collects the trick (that is, the cards just played) and keeps it on the table beside him.
Next each player in turn clockwise commencing with the winner of the trick draws one card from the face-down pack.
The winner of the previous trick plays the first card for the next trick and play then continues as before.
When all the cards in the centre pack have been used drawing ceases although play continues.
END OF ROUND
The round ends when all the players have played all their cards and the last trick has been won.
SCORING
At the end of the round each player counts the number of character cards, i.e., the number of 8's, 9's, 10's and II 's in the tricks which he has won, scoring I point for each of these cards. The total score for each round will always be 16.
END OF GAME
The game ends when 6 rounds have been played, the player with the highest score being the winner.
METHOD OF PLAY FOR 5 OR 6 PLAYERS
The Rules are exactly the same as for 2 to 4 players, except:—
(1) When there are 5 players 8 cards instead of 7 are dealt to each player.
(2) There will be no cards left over to place in the middle of the table so there is no drawing. The players play throughout with the cards that are dealt to them.
HINT ON PLAY
You do not gain anything by taking a trick unless it contains an 8, 9, 10 or 11, unless you want to lead for the next trick.
At the beginning of the game it is usually a disadvantage to lead, but at the end it can be very important to obtain the lead as otherwise you may have to play character cards on another player's lead of a different suit, and so lose them.
Remember you cannot win a trick if you cannot play a card of the same suit as the first player.
