Rules for
DAN DARE
A Game for 2 to 6 players.
It is an especially good game for 2 players.
Description.
The game consists of a pack of 44 cards, picturing Dan Dare and his friends of the "Eagle" magazine and exciting scenes of the wonderful men, machines, animals and scenery of the worlds in space.
There are 4 sets of 11 cards each:— |
Numbered |
Air Transport (green circles) |
1-11 |
Weapons (red circles) |
1-11 |
Land and Sea Transport (blue circles) |
1-11 |
Animals (yellow circles) |
1-11 |
In all 4 sets the No. 11 cards are Dan Dare; No. 10 cards are Miss Peabody and Sir Hubert Guest; No. 9 cards are Digby.
The higher the number on the card the more important it is so that Dan Dare is the highest card in every set.
OBJECT OF THE GAME
To be the player who wins most tricks in the second part of the game by skilful collection of cards during the first part.
Choose a dealer who deals as follows:—
For 2 players - 11 cards each.
For 3 players - 8 cards each.
For 4 players - 6 cards each.
For 5 players - 6 cards each.
For 6 players - 4 cards each.
Place the cards left over in a pack face down in the centre of the table. Turn over the top card of this pack so that it is face up.
RULES OF PLAY
First Part.
The game is played for tricks as in Whist and the value of the cards is shown by the numbers in their top left corners.
In this first part of the game the player who wins a trick takes into his hand the upturned card from the top of the pack so, if he wants it, he will try to win the trick. Only 2 players at a time play for the tricks, as follows.
The player on the left of the dealer begins by playing one card face up on the table. The card may be from any one of the 4 sets and he chooses one with a high number or a low number, according to whether he wants to win the trick or not.
The second player, who is the player on the left of the first player, "follows suit", that is, he plays a card of the same set as first player's card, if he can. If he cannot follow suit he must play a card of another set (which should be a low number, because even if it were a higher number than the first card it could not beat it); this is known as "throwing away".
NOTE:
1. If the first player wants to win the trick and, therefore, take the upturned card from the pack, he will play a card with a number he thinks high enough to beat the second player's card.
2. If the second player wants to win the upturned card, he must play a still higher card of the same set as the first one.
3. If the second player can follow suit but does not want to win or sees he cannot win, he will, of course, play the lowest card he has of the same set.
This play by the first 2 players decides the winner of the upturned card; the winner of the trick takes the card into his hand. The loser takes into his hand the face down card beneath it. The two cards that were played are not used again and are put aside.
The top card of the pack is again turned face up.
Now it is the turn of the second player to play first in the next trick. He is followed (if there are more than 2 players) by the player on his left. If there are 2 players only, each in turn plays first for each trick. When there are more than 2 players, the first to play in each trick is the one who was second player in the previous trick.
After every trick the turned up card is taken by the winner and the face down card beneath it by the loser and this continues until the pack is used up. The first part of the game now ends and players keep the cards in their hands.
Second Part.
The object of the second part of the game is for the players to win tricks with the cards they had in their hands at the end of the first part.
The player who dealt at the start of the game plays first and this time ALL PLAYERS play after him in turn.
As in the first part, players must, if they can, play a card of the same set as the first card played in each trick and the highest card of that set wins the trick. If they cannot follow suit they must "throw away".
The player playing the highest card collects and keeps in front of him the trick, which will consist of one card for each person playing.
THE PLAYER WHO HAS WON THE TRICK PLAYS FIRST IN THE NEXT ONE.
When the cards in the players hands have all been played, each counts the number of tricks he has won. These figures are recorded and all the cards are collected, shuffled and again dealt by the player on the left of the original dealer.
THE WINNER
The winner of the game is the player who has won most tricks after 12 deals. (In the case of 5 players, 10 deals).
As the game takes longer to play if there are only 2 or 3 players a shorter game with 6 deals only can be played.
