COLOMINO

Rules and Play of COLOMINO (52 cards)

1. Sideways 2. Fourways
3. Threeways 4. Domino

1. There are four distinct games in 'COLOMINO': 'Sideways,' 'Fourways1, Threeways' and 'Domino', details of which are given below.

2.The games 'Sideways', Four-ways', and 'Threeways' are for two, four or six players, using 48 cards and omitting the STAR cards. The game of 'Domino' is for two to six players, using all cards.

3. In the first three games, players endeavour to win sets by obscuring their opponents colour and leaving visible as many as possible of their own colour. In 'Domino' the side to first dispose of their own colour and the STAR card wins.

4. Well shuffle and deal "out all the cards, adding the STAR cards to the pack when playing 'Domino' (see rule 2). One side plays for yellow and the other green, and colours are chosen before play commences.

5. The playing face of each 3 card is divided into two parts, each part having four coloured squares, i.e., red, blue, mauve and EITHER yellow, green or white; yellow and green are the two opposing colours, white being neutral.

6. For an easy way to read the cards held by a player, take the cards dealt and select all 0 colours that are top left or bottom right. Then 1's from the remainder then 2's in the same way and 3's are left.

They should now be arranged in the following order. The first number indicates the top left hand colour and the second number the bottom right hand colour. (0 stands for green, yellow or white). This is the order 0/0, O/l, 0/2, 0/3, I/I, I/2, I/3, 2/3, 3/3. The order of cards as shown makes it clear that the top left corner colour is always a lower colour number than the colour number at the bottom right corner except where it is the same colour. This does not prevent the use of either side of the card in play. Since among the colours on each card there must be either yellow or green, the coloured tab above the index shows what the colour is when the cards are held fanshape in the hand ready for play.

7. In all games the colours yellow, green and white are considered the same colour, so that any two of these colours can be placed side by side.

8. The game of 'SIDEWAYS' 48 cards.

Form sides and sit alternately.

To start a set, players commence with any card, and each following card must have the same colours on the left hand side, except that the top colour of the previous card becomes the bottom colour of the following card. This card is placed on the first card to cover the right hand side of colours so as to leave the top right hand colour exposed. It will be seen (Fig. I.) that the colours coming into juxtaposition agree (see rule 7). Four cards form a set and each set counts to the side whose colour predominates. When opposing colours are equal, the set is considered a draw and cannot count in favour of either side.

The player to complete a set continues the game by playing, the first card of the next set and play continues until the cards are exhausted, the winners being the side who has won the most sets (see rule 9).

9. A player may be unable to play to a set in which case he calls 'can't play' indicating he has no card to follow; on the other hand he may be able to play a card that favours the opposing side, in this case he can call 'pass' and withhold play; in so calling he indicates that he holds a card that can be played but allows his partner the chance of playing another card. If no one has played a card when his next turn comes, he must then play the card. This rule applies to 'Sideways,' 'Fourways' and Threeways'.

10.The game of 'FOURWAYS' — 48 cards.

Players form sides and sit alternately. There are four cards to each set, and as in 'Sideways' the yellows or greens showing when each set is completed indicate the winners. Play one card each turn. To start a set, players commence with any card. The method of laying each card and the order and matching of the colours are the same as in 'Sideways', but after the first card of a set has been played, the other players have the choice of playing from any of the four corners of the preceding card; thus, a card may be played against the left or right side of the colours of a preceding card and extending above or below the same (Fig. 4). This offers far more skill in selecting a card to obscure an opponent's colour. Each set counts to the side whose colour predominates. When opposing colours are equal, the set is considered a draw and cannot count in favour of either side. The player to complete a set continues the game by playing the first card of the next set. See also rule 9.

11. The game of THREEWAYS' — 48 cards.

Players form sides and sit alternately. Play one card each turn. To start a set, players commence with any card. There are three cards to each set In this game the cards follow to the right of the first card and the top colour of each card must be the same, the cards being placed level against the inside of the former card. The second colour of the first card becomes the last colour of the next card, the third and fourth of the first card becoming the second and third respectively, as in 'Sideways' (Fig. 2). Each set counts to the side whose colour predominates. When opposing colours are equal, the set considered a draw and cannot count in favour of either side. The player to complete a set continues the game by playing the first card of the next set.

See also rule 9.

12. The game of 'DOMINO' use all 52 cards.

Form sides and sit alternately. In this game the cards are placed side by side (the four colour side) (Fig. 3) and must match every time (see rule 7).

The cards are played in one direction only. If a STAR care is played, the other three star cards must follow before going on with the other cards. A player at each turn can play cards out as far as he can go. The side which first disposes of all their own colours (yellow. or green) and any star cards they hold, are the winners.
