CARD GOLF
by Pepys (Castell Brothers)

CARD GOLF

Successor to "KARGO" For 2 to 4 players

While a knowledge of Golf is not necessary to play this game, golfers will find that it is based on the Rules of Golf.

Every stroke pictured in the cards Is an accurate reproduction of a swing, but the illustrations do not represent any Golfer, living or dead.

CONTENTS

Distance Indicator marked off in 20-yard lengths to show the positions of balls at the completion of each stroke. It shows also when a ball is in the Rough, or Bunkered, and the distance of the Hole from the Tee.

4 Golf "balls", numbered 1 to 4.
54 illustrated cards, consisting of:
Stroke cards:
29 Distance cards.
12 Putts.
1 "Holed-Out" card.

!2 Hazard cards.
Numbers on cards denote yards.

OBJECT OF THE GAME

To get the ball into the Hole in the least number of turns.

HOW TO START

Turn to pages the table which give the lengths for many famous courses, and decide over which one you prefer to play. There is also a column for you to till in , with the lengths of holes of your own course.

Lay out the Distance Indicator in the centre of the table. If there are 2 or 4 players place balls numbered 1 and 2 on the Tee. If 3 players add No. 3 ball.

Place No. 4 ball on the Fairway of the Indicator as a marker at the distance shown for Hole No. 1 of the course chosen. This represents the Hole. The Green is the Fairway area within 20 yards of the Hole, beyond and short of it.

If there are 4 players they play as partners, if 2 or 3 they play against each other.

Partners sit opposite each other and play the same ball at their turn; 2 or 3 players each play their own ball.

THE DEAL

Choose a dealer who shuffles the pack and deals 6 cards face-downwards to each player, placing the rest of the pack face-down wards on the table.

PLAY

Each player takes his turn in rotation and the game is to play Stroke cards to reach the Hole, or the Green. If the exact distance of the Hole is reached, the player is "Pin-high" and one Putt card only is needed to Hole-out (see also "Holed-out" card, further in the rules). If the ball is on the Green but not Pin-high, one Sunk. Putt or two Putt cards are needed—played, of course, in due turns.

A description of the cards is given further in the rules.

The player on the left of the dealer plays first, turns pass to the left.

The first shot at each Hole must go a distance of at least 80 yards.

No card may be played at any time which would take a ball more than 40 yards beyond the Hole.

AT EACH TURN A PLAYER MUST DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:-

1. Play a Stroke card.

2. Play a Hazard card on any opponent.

3. Draw the top card from the pack.

It is never compulsory to play a card. There is no discarding.

Each player, at his turn, plays his cards before him, one above the other.

Whenever a Stroke card is played the player moves his ball on the Indicator Board the distance as shown on the card, towards the Hole.

The balls keep to the Fairway unless certain Hazard cards are played which require the ball to be moved into the Rough or Bunker sections of the Board (see under "HAZARD CARDS").

Play continues in turn, to the left, until one player holes-out with a Putt, Sunk-Putt or Holed-out card and then, unless this player is the Dealer, play continues until the Dealer has had his turn. This ensures that all players have had an equal number of turns. If more than one player holes-out, the hole is halved.

The Dealer for each hole, if there are 2 or 3 players, is the winner of the previous hole. If a hole is halved the Dealer is not changed.

If there are 4 players the new Dealer is either the partner of the previous Dealer or the player on the latter's right, depending on the result of the previous hole.

The whole pack is shuffled after each hole and 6 cards dealt to each player. The balls are returned to the Tee and No. 4 ball is repositioned at the distance for the next hole, to mark it.

DESCRIPTION OF THE CARDS

Although to speed up play instructions are given on the cards, the following information should be read through, particularly with regard to Holed-Out and Putt cards.

I. STROKE CARDS

(1) Distance Cards

These comprise 13 different clubs. There are two cards for each club except that there are 3 Drivers and 4 No. 9 Irons. In most cases the two cards for each club send the ball different distances, as marked on the cards.

(a) 1 Wood (Driver)

This can only be used off the Tee, i.e. only for the first shot of a hole, unless this shot has been cancelled by a Lost Ball or Out of Bounds card.

(b) No. 2, 3, 4 Woods; 1, 2. 3, 4 Irons - no special rules.

(c) No. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Irons, see special instructions on each card.

(2) Holed-Out

There is only one Holed-Out card in the pack and it can be played together with any card that exactly reaches the hole from a distance of more than 20 yards. This is the only time when two cards can be played at once and is the only way of finishing a Hole without playing a Putt or Sunk Putt.

(3) (a) Putts

If a player has reached exactly the right distance he is said to be "Pin-High" and one Putt card then holes-out. When 20 yards away from the hole, 2 Putt cards played at different turns are necessary, the second one holes-out, (see Missed Putt rule).

(b) Sunk Putt

This card holes-out from anywhere on the Green, i.e. within 20 yards of the hole.

II. HAZARD CARDS

A Hazard card is played by handing it to any opponent who then places it face-up on top of his cards on the table. A second one may not be given to him until he has played a Stroke card at his proper turn. Except for Missed Putt no Hazard card may be played on an opponent who has reached the Green, nor of course can one be played on a player who hasn't left the tee.

(1) Lost Ball

The last Stroke card played by the player receiving this card is cancelled. He returns his ball to where it was before his last stroke. This may mean his return to a Bunker, Bad Bunker, Rough or Tee, and the particular rules for these positions would then re-apply. He also misses a turn. This penalty is called "Losing Stroke and Distance".

(2) Out of Bounds

Exactly as for "Lost Ball".

(3) Water Hazard

The player misses a turn, i.e. Suffer; a penalty of one stroke.

(4) Bunker

The player moves his ball across into either of the "Bunker" sections of the Indicator Board, not altering the distance. When he plays his next stroke he must use a No. 7, 8 or 9 Iron.

(5) Bad Bunker

The player moves his ball as for "Bunker" (above), and must play his next stroke with a No. 9 Iron.

(6) Slice and Full into Rough

The ball is moved into the appropriate Rough section of the Indicator at the same distance (Slice to the right; Pull to the left).

Missed Putt

This card may be played on any Putt card which has not Holed-Out and it cancels the putt. It cannot be played on a Sunk Putt or any other Putt which holes-out, i.e. on the first Putt card from "Pin-high" or on a second Putt card (unless the player's first Putt card was cancelled by a Missed Putt).

HINTS ON PLAY 2 or 3 Players

It is often wiser to delay playing a Distance card until you have the necessary cards in your hand to reach the Green.

4 Players

Remember this is a partnership game and your partner may have the cards you lack.
