G A Henty
After a childhood plagued with sickness, he went on to study at Westminster School and then to Cambridge where he immersed himself in the Classics. With the outbreak of the Crimean War he immediately volunteered in search of adventure. He served for five years before leaving to become a roving war reporter. His amazing career as a writer of historical adventures began in 1868 with the publication of "The March to Magdala" in 1868 published by the Tinsley Brothers. This was followed the next year by "All but Lost", which was issued in three volumes by the same publisher. Out of the many dozens of books he was to write to thrill generations of young boys, these remain the most valuable to find.
