John Hassal

Although he was born in Devon, England he went on to pursue his education on the continent. He studied at Neuenheim College in Heidelburg and later in Antwerp and Paris. The first book to be published with his illustrations was "Two well worn shoe stories" by Sands in 1899, the first of many books.

He became the President of the London Sketch Club in 1903 and went on to found the New Art School with his friend Charles van Havermaet. His daughter, Joan Hassal became a respected wood engraver. He died in 1948, aged 80.

One of his most sort after books is "The Wouldbegoods" which he illustrated for E Nesbit. It was published by Unwin in 1901.
