Daniel Defoe
The author of Robinson Crusoe which although not intended or young readers quickly established itself as a children's classic adventure story. He was born around the turn of the 17th Century in London and brought up as a non-conformist. Failing to become a merchant, he turned to writing, churning out dozens of political tracts. He published his famous book in 1719 under the title "The Life and strange surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe" with the publishers W Taylor, as an anonymous author. All his early books are eagerly collected as well as some later limited edtion reprints. One volume that deserves special mention is the version illustrated by Edward Gordon Craig and published in a Limited Edition of 500 copies with morocco-backed cloth binding and in its own slipcase by Basilisk Press in 1979.
