Richmal Crompton

Born in Lancashire in 1890, she studied in London, becoming the Classics mistress at Bromley High School. She was forced to take early retirement because of ill health and wrote the much loved series of "William" books. "Just William" was illustrated by Thomas Henry and published in 1922 by Newnes.

She continued to describe his adventures until she died in 1969. All the 38 first editions books were published by George Newnes London although Dymock's Sydney went on to reprint many of them from the 1940's onwards.

TIP : The first edition is slightly smaller than the others in the series, measuring 7" x 4.5" inches. The first edition with its red boards, can also be identified by the unnumbered pages of adverts at the end of the book.
