Susan Coolidge
An American author, she was born in Ohio in 1845. Her family moved to Connecticut and she went on to grow up in New Haven. During the outbreak of the American Civil War she volunteered and worked as a nurse. Although her success as a writer was assured with the publication of "What Katy Did", she had written another book earlier that year, "The New Years Bargain" and both were published in 1872. Her last book, "A Sheaf of Stories" was published in 1906, one year after her death, aged 60.
