Helen Bannerman

She was born Helen Watson of Edinburgh in 1863 and became Bannerman when she fell in love with and married an Army Doctor of that name. She followed him when he was posted to India and while living there wrote her first story "Little Black Sambo" to amuse her children.

It was published as "Anonymous" by Grant Richards in the "Dumpy Books for Children" Series No. 4 in 1899, after he had bought the copyright of the story for £5. Inspired by its success, Helen went on to write more stories in the same genre.
