Enid Bagnold
She studied art in London before volunteering to become a nurse in the First World War. Although she authored half a dozen books for for adults, her children books include "Alice and Thomas and James" published by Heineman in 1930. Her more famous story "National Velvet", which was brought out by the same publisher five years later in 1935. She died in 1981, aged 92.
