Edward Ardizzone
Although regarded as a British illustrator he was actually born in the provence of Haiphong, in China in 1900. He was brought up in England and went on to study at the Westminster School of Art. He did illustrations for many magazines including "Punch" and the "London Magazine". He married in 1929 and with the outbreak of World War ll he became an official War artist. Although he illustrated a large number of classics which included new editions of Charles Dickens, he is probably best remembered for the distinctive style that he employed in those books he wrote and illustrated himself. His rarest and most sought after book is "Little Tim and The Brave Sea Captain" that was published by the OUP in 1936. (A revised edition was republished in 1955 ). Among the books he illustrated for other authors "The Tale of Ali Baba" translated by J C Madrus and E. Powys Mathers is amongst the rarest. This volume was published by the Limited Edition Club, U.S. in 1949
