Alger
Horatio Alger, Jr. was born on January 13, 1832. He became a prolific American author whose principal output were novels that followed the adventures of bootblacks, newsboys, peddlers, buskers, and other impoverished children. The books charted their hero's rise from humble backgrounds to lives of respectable middle-class security and comfort. These novels were to become hugely popular in their day. He died on July 18, 1899.
